Things are quiet this weekend in McKinney. With everyone gearing up for the big celebrations scheduled for the 4th of July weekend and hunkering down for the July heat it’s a good weekend to just relax. If you want to get out and about, we’ve got a few really fun suggestions.
Get Ready for Your Beach Trip
The McKinney Performing Arts Center is presenting Friday Night Flicks throughout the summer. This Friday they present the perfect show to watch before you head to the coast. Jaws is the story of aa gigantic great white shark who menaces the small island community of Amity, and the police chief, marine scientist and grizzled fisherman set out to stop it. As if you didn’t know that.

Get a Head Start on Independence Day Celebrations
The McKinney Community Band presents Americana, a collection of patriotic songs at the McKinney Performing Arts Center. This will put you in the mood for the upcoming holiday, and maybe even inspire you to audition for the band yourself!

Tucker Hill gets into the spirit of the season with beautiful front porches decked out in red, white and blue. Take a drive through the Tucker Hill neighborhood, located on Highway 380 between Custer and Lake Forest, then visit the Tucker Hill Facebook page to vote for your favorite. If you’d like to see more photos of the neighborhood, be sure to check out McKinney Life Photos who took the lovely picture below.
Native Texas Butterfly House and Garden
All this rain may not have made the impact on Lake Lavon that we would like, but it sure has made everything green around here. Enjoy the lush growth and learn about butterflies over at the Heard this weekend. The Native Texas Butterfly House & Garden allows you to “walk among free-flying native butterflies and other pollinators.” It’s a great place for photography and to get some ideas for your own garden.

Grab a Snow Cone
One of my favorite sites in McKinney this time of year is the snow cone spots that pop up all over town. My kids are cone connoisseurs, and here are a few of their favorites:
Scallywags, aka the pirate ship, located at Ridge and ElDorado.
Bahama Bucks, which you can find at Virginia and Jordan.
Snowballs, at Graves and Virginia, just east of 75.
Snowie Shaved Ice located at the Parkway Auto Spa on ElDorado.
Do you have a favorite snow cone stand?
